Ironically, this modern Master did not begin his formal education in pursuit of the arts. Byerley began at the University of Missouri-Columbia as a pre-medical student. When he took his required fine arts course, he fell in love with the smell of oil paints. From there his fate was set. He went on to study the Old Masters’ tradition of painting and enjoyed his education so thoroughly he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Fine Art. After completing his education, Byerley taught for five years before he turned to art professionally in 1970.
When describing Bob Byerley art, his paintings are often compared to those of many great artists: Rembrandt, for his use of a strong single light source; Rockwell, for his nostalgic themes and Americana imagery, and; the Dutch Masters, for his meticulous attention to detail. But for all the characteristics of his paintings, Byerley is most known for his “Thompe l’oeil” style or fool-the-eye realism.
Byerley states, “In painting, truth can be the turn of the head, the sunlight caressing a hand, the movement of a graceful line or the combination of still life items that gently return you to the pleasant memories of the past. In life those truths happen simply, quietly and naturally. They cannot be contrived, staged, faked or manipulated.”
His favorite subjects, children, add to the unique appeal of Byerley’s art. He understands the innocence and unlimited imagination of his subjects and he captures those qualities masterfully in his works of art. His style, attention to detail and enduring subject matter combined, create images so intriguing you can feel trouble coming by the twinkle of a young man’s eye or you can hear the laughter of a group of children playing on a warm summer day.
Bob Byerley has gained international recognition for his art. His original oil paintings and limited edition prints are among the most sought after art by an American artist today.
